A woman dressed in a business suit had fallen off the station platform, and a train was bearing down on her. People were all crowding around vainly trying to get her out before the train ran her over. Everyone was shouting, “Give me your hand!” but she wouldn’t reach up.
Suddenly, a wise Methodist minister elbowed his way through the crowd and leaned over the woman.
“Friend,” he asked with compassion, “What is your profession?”
“I work for the Inland Revenue,” gasped the woman.
“Please, take my hand”, said the minister.
The woman immediately grasped the minister’s hand and was quickly pulled to safety.
He then turned to the amazed bystanders and said, “Never ask the Inland Revenue to ‘give’ you anything.”
That brings to mind my very first job when I left school.
At the age of 16 I became an employee of the Inland Revenue.
My first boss had the rather unfortunate surname of BLOOD!
With many peaceful blessings
