And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.
Exodus 31: 3
And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Deuteronomy 34: 9
And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God [was] in him, to do judgment.
1 Kings 3: 28
In the Bible, the word wisdom occurs on 234 separate occasions.
Solomon, of course, was renowned for his worldly wisdom and sense of fair play and justice! He wrote some 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs.
Sadly, wisdom in today’s society seems a long-forgotten virtue. How many worldly decisions, whether by Governments, or you personally, are based upon what is wise?
Even common sense is very seldom applied to even the simplest of problems.
The Dictionary definitions of ‘Wisdom’ are:-
- The quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight
- Scholarly knowledge or learning: the wisdom of the schools.
- Wise sayings or teachings; precepts.
- A wise act or saying.
I always remember the little ditty that I learnt at school:-
which is translated, as you will probably have already worked out for yourself, as:-
Too wise you are
Too wise you be
I see you are
Too wise for me
Why not make one of your New Year Resolutions to take only wise decisions? Think before you act, and only act if you can so so without harming anyone.
When Jabez asked God to expand his territories he also asked that God protect him against Satan and help him only to take actions that would harm no one (1 Corinthians 4: 10)
