Wisdom

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.

Exodus 31: 3

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Deuteronomy 34: 9

And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God [was] in him, to do judgment.

1 Kings 3: 28

In the Bible, the word wisdom occurs on 234 separate occasions.

Solomon, of course, was renowned for his worldly wisdom and sense of fair play and justice! He wrote some 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs.

Sadly, wisdom in today’s society seems a long-forgotten virtue. How many worldly decisions, whether by Governments, or you personally, are based upon what is wise?

Even common sense is very seldom applied to even the simplest of problems.

The Dictionary definitions of ‘Wisdom’ are:-

  • The quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight

  • Scholarly knowledge or learning: the wisdom of the schools.

  • Wise sayings or teachings; precepts.

  • A wise act or saying.

I always remember the little ditty that I learnt at school:-

YYUR
YYUB
ICUR
YY4me

which is translated, as you will probably have already worked out for yourself, as:-

Too wise you are
Too wise you be
I see you are
Too wise for me

Why not make one of your New Year Resolutions to take only wise decisions? Think before you act, and only act if you can so so without harming anyone.

When Jabez asked God to expand his territories he also asked that God protect him against Satan and help him only to take actions that would harm no one (1 Corinthians 4: 10)

God Bless

The Book of Big Prayers

The Bible is the WORD of God; it includes 66 books – 39 in what we call the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.

Reading your Bible every day will bring you nearer to God and the nearer to God you become the more He will listen to you whenever you pray.

In the Book of BIG Prayers you will discover many scriptures that will greatly enrich your life.

Prayers do not have to be lengthy ones; God is always very happy to receive your prayers, whatever the length, providing you are genuinely sincere in all that you are asking of Him.

Jesus said “Ask and it shall be given unto you” (Matthew 7: 7) – and thus it is, you will soon discover, on many many occasions when you pray.

One of the most powerful prayers in this book is the Prayer of Jabez. Not much is known about Jabez but what we do know is that Jabez was a very honourable man and that his mother called him Jabez because he gave her much pain when he was born.

And Jabez called on God – in prayer – saying:-

“Oh that you would bless me and expand my territory.

And that you will protect me from evil, so that I may not cause pain to anyone”

You will find Jabez’s prayer in 1 Corinthians 4: 10.

And the Bible goes on to say that God granted Jabez’s request.

Jabez’s superiority of honour lay:-

  • In piety towards God, the true source and characteristic of honour
  • In his pursuit of advancement being in dependence upon God
  • In his complete dependence upon God’s protection
  • In his unshaken confidence in restraining and preventing grace

In the Lord’s Prayer – of which I hope you are already familiar – we say ‘Thy will be done’. Not your will, remember, but God’s will!

God is the Father of us all. He is a wonderful parent and looks after each one of us – individually.

However, the saying ‘God looks after those who look after themselves’ is also very true as God can only help us if we are prepared to listen to His inspirational parental guidance. God loves us all equally.

By praying at least once every day – more often if possible – you will soon be able to establish a very deep and personal relationship with God.
